When I realized I would not have time to take a suitable photograph with which to end the year 2008, I decided to reach deep into the archives.

I promised my friend Seth he’d eventually see these pictures, which were taken at the top of the Ute Trail, high above the town of Aspen, Colorado.

Seth is one of my best friends. Every time we get together, life seems to make just a bit more sense. And I thought this picture would be a fitting end to 2008. It’s been one hell of a ride this year – ups, downs, free falls, soaring to new heights – things I never could have imagined one, two, or ten years ago.

Here’s to hoping 2009 is just as eventful.

Remember, my friends, that fortune favors the bold.

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.” – Henry David Thoreau

So – do you feel lucky? Happy New Year.

At one time, all that you see here was covered by a vast ocean. Enjoy the 16×9 goodness. You can find a larger version on Flickr if you so desire. Hmm…the width for all photos on this blog is a nice, solid 800 pixels, but when I crop them to 16×9 (as below), they can look a little mushy or something. Anyway, enjoy…

Doesn’t this photo just make you want to grab your colt and bring justice to wild lands that have it not?

Actually, this a photo of the “Canyon Within a Canyon” at the Colorado National Monument. It started as a HDR image, and still is, but due to the light conditions on this day, I think most of my shots from the Colorado National Monument will be in black and white. That’s alright though, I’ve always liked shots of the American West like this.

This is obviously my first post in awhile! I’m happy to finally have a chance to start going through my backlog of photos, which dates all the way back to this picture, taken in July (Oy!). Anyway, I hope to maintain a steady trickle of output in the coming weeks. Keep a lookout for photos from Colorado, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

In case anyone wonders, this is a 5 exposure HDR. Out of an entire week visiting my parents in Colorado, I had only one day with the right light for this shot. Back in July, there were major forest fires burning in California, and I think they contributed to a week of hazy skies.
