From Wikipedia: Downtown is a term primarily used in North America to refer to a city’s core, usually in a geographical, commercial, and community sense.

The view from the 86th floor observatory of the Empire State Building as one looks downtown. There are a few NYC landmarks in this picture, some more prominent than others.
